Abstract: Today's society is gradually entering an aging phase, with a significant increase in the risk of chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injury among the elderly population. The aging of various systems and organs in the elderly, along with the coexistence of multiple diseases and polypharmacy, exacerbates the burden on the kidneys. Therefore, understanding the characteristics of kidney aging and accurately assessing the renal function of elderly patients are of great significance for the clinical diagnosis and treatment as well as medical scientific research work of physicians in geriatrics and nephrology departments. This article reviews relevant literature and provides a comprehensive overview of the characteristics of kidney aging and the research progress in pathophysiology.
