Abstract:

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is an increasingly acceptable form of renal replacement therapy for patients with end stage renal disease.Peritoneal access is attained with a catheter device that traverses the abdominal wall to provide an avenue through which dialysis solutions can be exchanged.Reliable access to the peritoneal cavity is essential to the success of PD.Over the past decade,nephrologists have increasingly performed percutaneous insertion of PD catheters with comparable success rates.The discussion herein will review the current available literature on this specific insertion technique and focus on the feasibility and safety in the clinical application.Last,we will discuss some of the challenges and indications,and draw overall conclusions.
