Abstract:
To investigate the risk factors of coronary calcification and progression in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients. Methodology:Sixtytwo patients with MHD were enrolled into this prospective study. Coronary artery calcification score (CACS, Agatston score) was detected by spiral CT. At the same time, serum were collected to detect the biochemical parameters. Calcium, phosphate and intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) were measured every six months. CACS were reevaluated at follow up to 2 years. Results:The total coronary calcification occurrence was 709%, among them, the proportion of CACS beyond 100 was 682%. Compared the two groups of patients with or without coronary calcification, it was demonstrated that age, total cholesterol (TC), left ventricular ejection fraction, diameter of left and right atrial were significant different. TC was the independent risk factor for coronary calcification. After 2 years of followup, fortyseven patients were reevaluated the CACS, increase of CACS was noted in 617% of them. The mean serum calcium concentration was independent risk factor for calcification progression. Conclusion:The total coronary calcification rate was 709% in this study. TC and mean serum calcium concentration during followup were independent risk factors for calcification occurrence and progression respectively.
