Abstract: Mitochondria are the main organelles that produce ATP and are involved in a variety of intracellular biological processes. Although mitochondrial biogenesis, dynamic changes as well as its physiological function are complex processes, recent studies have made some progress in this field. Podocyte injury is a key step in the development of glomerular diseases. Podocytes are terminally differentiated cells with complex structures located lateral to the glomerular basement membrane and are important components that constitute the glomerular filtration barrier. Little is known about podocyte energetic patterns, and recent studies have shown that metabolic disorders may be involved in podocyte injury. We review and discuss here the promoting effects of metabolic disorders as well as mitochondrial dysfunction on podocyte injury.
