Vitamin D and Chronic Kindey Disease

Abstract:

There is a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in patients with chronic kindey disease (CKD). Vitamin D deficiency not only leads to abnormalities of calcium and phosphorus metabolism and bone mineralization in CKD patients, but also accelerates the progression of kindey disease. Accumulating clinical evidence suggests that active vitamin D and its analogs could reduce proteinuria and slow the decline in kidney function in patients with CKD. The mechanisms of salutary effects of vitamin D on the kidney include the suppression of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), immunomodulation, anti-inflammation, improvement in insulin resistance and so on.
