Abstract:
Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS) has been defined as a clinical syndrome continuously, intermittently, or repeatedly presenting with symptoms of intestinal obstruction due to adhesions of a diffusely thickened peritoneum. EPS is a serious complication that can occur during longterm peritoneal dialysis (PD), although only a small percentage of PD patients develop EPS. Inflammation, angiogenesis, and fibrosis of the peritoneum are the key factors while peritoneal fibrosis and adhesion is the core element. The precise mechanism underlying EPS remains unclear and the optimal management regime for EPS is yet to be established. New research progresses on pathogenesis and preventive/therapeutic strategies of EPS will be presented in this review.
