Abstract:

ABSTRACT: Accurate assessment of Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is essential for detecting, staging and evaluating the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Direct measurement of GFR is not feasible in routine clinical practice, consequently, estimating equations are required. In the past 30 years, numerous equations have been developed to estimate GFR. The Cockcroft-Gault formula, the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) Study equation, the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology (CKD-EPI) Collaboration equation and their corresponding modified equations were widely used in adults. The CKD-EPI equation is known to be more accurate than the MDRD Study equation at higher GFR and is recommended by currently guidelines. In addition, there are some estimating equations derived from cystatin C. This review is to summarize the development of the above-mentioned equations and their individual characteristics as well as influence factors.
