Abstract:

ABSTRACT  Animal models of chronic kidney disease (CKD) show that metabolic acidosis and/or dietary acid induce intrakidney mechanisms that cause kidney injury and mediate progressive glomerular filtration rate (GFR) decline. Recently studies demonstrated that dietary acid reduction with Na+-based alkali or alkali inducing food ameliorated kidney injury in patients with CKD and reduced GFR, with and without metabolic acidosis, which support that dietary acid reduction with Na+-based alkali or alkali inducing food is an effective kidney-protective adjunct to current strategies.
